Been driving on the Deerfoot recently? My BIGGEST pet peeve is when people drive in the left hand lane. Those signs should say “Left lane for passing only.” Not “Slower traffic keep right.”
- You do not merge onto a freeway where the average speed is at least 120 km/h doing 60 km/h.
- You do not stop at the end of a merge lane. You merge!
- You signal when you change lanes.
- If your lane ends, you don’t just get to move into mine. It is like changing lanes. See point 3.
- In a weave lane, you don’t just get to move over because you want to exit. You have to check your mirrors and make sure someone (like me) isn’t there. After that, it’s like changing lanes. See point 3.
- The fast lane is for cars that want to go faster than the average rate of speed. If you don’t, get over. In other words, slower traffic keep right.
- Consider getting in the lane you would like to be in to exit in advance of your exit. Don’t leave it to the last minute.
- If you are already on the freeway and someone is entering ahead, move into the other lane, if possible, to allow them to enter. If not possible, speed up or slow down to create a gap for the vehicle to enter. This is how merging works. It is the responsibility of both drivers to ensure a safe merge.
- If you are merging, speed up or slow down to fit into the gap created by the other drivers. See point 2.
- Someone going slower than the average speed of traffic/speed limit is more dangerous than someone going faster. It is not safer to be going 90 km/h when the speed limit is 100 km/h and the average speed is 110-120 km/h.
